Recommended age/Reading level: Swope, S. (1989). The araboolies of liberty street. New York: Clarkson N. Potter, Inc.
Overview of book:
This story is very appealing due to its subtle theme of tolerance and presents many lessons to the young reader. The “oppressors” General Pinch and his wife “prohibit laughter, activity and games.” Then the Araboolies, a zany and colorful family move next door and represent the ‘threat’ of nonconformity. In the end the children revolt and readers can cheer as the Pinches’ come to a justified end. This story with it colorful illustrations are a wonderful way to explore rules and fair play. Teachers/parents can engage students in discussions around being different in a society where various rules/laws and beliefs are applied.
Highly recommended/Recommended/Not Recommended:
Recommend: Conveys a message about diversity and individuality and that children have power over “small minded” thinking.
